NASA scientists discovered shady places on the moon in depressions where the temperature is always around 17 degrees Celsius.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to Phys.org.

For the research, the scientists used data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft and computer simulations.

In general, the Moon’s surface warms up to 130 degrees Celsius during the day and cools down to minus 170 degrees Celsius at night.

Depressions were first discovered in 2009

“Lunar depressions are the most interesting feature of the lunar surface. Knowing that they create a stable thermal environment, we can form an idea of these unique places and the prospects for studying them,” said Noah Petro, a scientist at NASA’s Space Flight Center in Greenbelt.

Two of the most obvious depressions clearly lead to caves.

Working on a cylindrical depression 100 meters deep and the size of a football field, the scientists used computer modeling to analyze the thermal regime.

The results showed that the temperature in the permanently shaded areas of the depression fluctuated slightly during the lunar day and remained at around 17 degrees Celsius.

A day on the Moon takes about 15 Earth days, during which the surface is constantly exposed to the sun’s rays and heated to extremely high temperatures. Cold nights also last about 15 Earth days.

The study of depressions and caves with a stable and comfortable temperature will help simulate a person staying on the moon during future flights.

As reported, the American space agency NASA will send two more mini-helicopters to the Red Planet to help return the collected samples to the Martian surface.
