Meta company, owner of social networks Facebook and Instagram, announced the ban on the Russian troll factory Cyber Front Z, which aims to show the audience supporting Putin’s war in Ukraine via Telegram.
As reported by Ukrinform, this is stated in the company’s quarterly report on threats.
Meta noted that the Cyber Front Z group, which emerged after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was “incompetent and largely ineffective”.
The company’s report described the group’s activities as “a deplorable attempt to create the impression of massive online support for the invasion of Russia by using fake accounts to post pro-Russian comments on influencers and media content.”
Meta discovered the group’s activities on its platform in March, after Russian media announced that it had begun recruiting online members.
The company launched an investigation and discovered Cyber Front Z’s Instagram accounts and links to people linked to the Internet Research Agency, a Russian organization that spread fake social media accounts and was linked to Putin oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Attempts to spam were also detected on social networks Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, VKontakte and Odnoklassniki. Politicians, journalists, actors and trademarks from around the world who publicly condemned the Russian occupation and supported Ukraine became targets.
After examining the activities of questionable reviewers, Meta concluded that they work “with a small lunch break” seven days a week. In “individual cases”, the same account posted both pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian comments with a difference of a few minutes. The researchers suggested that this may reflect an attempt to undermine the troll factory from within.
The report states that the group acted ineffectively, apparently simulating activities to persuade their sponsors or employers.
In total, 45 Facebook and 1,037 Instagram accounts linked to Cyber Front Z were removed, according to Meta.
According to Cyberscoop, the Cyber Front Z troll group is still active on Telegram and has 110,692 subscribers as of August 4.
Among Thursday’s many messages was a note praising “memes for distribution from the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense” alongside Amnesty International’s report criticizing the military tactics of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
