Diagnostic processes can go from the simplest to the terrifyingly complex. Every user, and especially one who has built their own computers, knows that when the computer does not start, the time we may have to spend to find out the cause (and of course to fix it) can vary from a few minutes. for several hours. Fortunately, this has improved over the years, but it remains a potentially complex process.

A common failure case in a system that fails to boot we found it in RAM failure. Thanks to the diagnostic systems that the vast majority of motherboards contain, either through LEDs, sounds or in some cases even a display, we can already find out that we are facing a memory problem at the first failed boot attempt. This only gets us closer to the cause of the failure, but doesn’t tell us everything we need to know to fix it.

If you’ve been through this, you know what I’m talking about, it’s time to find the element that’s failing, plus even though it’s hard to explain in many cases, a memory module may work in one slot and fail in another. So it may take us a long time to identify a module that fails. All the more so if we do not trust the first result and for safety reasons we prefer to repeat the test a second time to confirm it.

However, this tedious process is becoming a thing of the past, thanks to the latest update of MemTest86, the popular system memory diagnostic software, which is now available as a big news.it is able to identify not only the memory module that fails, but also the chip inside it in which the problem is located. In this way and with certainty, we will be able to immediately identify the component that is failing and proceed to replace it.

This new feature is limited (at least for now, we don’t know if this is planned to change in the future) to DDR5 memory. This is not very present yet, although with its price drop in recent months, as well as the arrival of a new generation of chips from AMD (which will only be compatible with DDR5) and Intel (which will prefer DDR5 over DDR4), it will start to happen in a few months a new standard.

MemTest86 is installed on a USB stick which, once ready, will need to be used to boot the PC.
