Microsoft’s rise as a major contributor to open source has been almost meteoric since Satya Nadella took over as CEO. The corporation’s transformation has been such that it has become a no-brainer as the number one open source company after Linux became the most used operating system on Azure, its cloud computing platform.
But Microsoft appears to be losing its crown, as Finnish consultancy Aiven announced in Helsinki that Google has increased its contributors enough to overtake the Redmond corporation. This change in the top spot comes in part because the search giant increased monthly commits on GitHub by 20% compared to the same period last year.
