A 30 terabyte SSD for .99? Unbelievable… but fake

We’ve been talking about a drop in graphics card prices for some time now (coming from the dire state of said market throughout 2021), and just a few days ago we told you that inventory was starting to pile up in warehouses, suggesting that in the near term we can wait for more and better offers to come, both in terms of components and complete systems, both portable and desktop. Only Sony seems to be going against the grain with the PlayStation 5 price hike. Of course, you can afford it when there is a mismatch between supply and demand.

So it’s a good time to stay tuned for deals that pop up. While you don’t even have to become a hitchhiker, don’t forget that every Friday we release our special Red Friday, with the best offers you can find on the marketto which are also added specials that we issue on specific dates and in periods of the year when there is a more frequent need to make purchases of this type.

When choosing products, we always take into account some key points, which we can summarize by stating that they have a remarkable value, that they are recommended products and that you can get them with peace of mind and security. And it is so that in some cases it is possible to find exceptional offers, but every time we find one of this type, we subject it to an exhaustive analysis to confirm that they are real and reliable, that is, that they are not trying to give us the cat behind the rabbit .

And why do I mention it? Well, because for some time external SSD storage units have been starting to appear, first on Aliexpress and now also on the popular American retailer Walmart, at scandalous, exceptional, demolition prices… all adjectives do not reach the qualification of a unique and unrepeatable offer: u30TB external SSD for $29. Too good to be true, don’t you think?

The good news is that cyber security expert Ray[REDACTED] posted a very interesting one twitter thread, in which he extensively documents the tests he performed on one of these units he purchased through Aliexpress. The process in which he analyzed the inside of the received unit to verify that it contained two small capacity microSD cards soldered to a USB 2.0 compatible board. The firmware on this board has been modified so that each of these cards reports its capacity to the operating system as 15 terabytes, for a total of 30 terabytes, although of course the actual capacity of the cards is much less.

The drive is even smarter and more complex because when the user uses it to store files, maintain the folder structure you defined and create files with the names you copy from…but without content. So there’s a surprise when you try to access any of them because they apparently contain nothing at all. Quite a clever trick, we can’t deny that, but it reminds us once again that if something seems too good to be true, it probably isn’t. And if you need a fast and real SSD, remember the offer we told you about this morning, in this case it’s real:

  • Crucial MX500 1TB CT1000MX500SSD1 SATA SSD, for 90 euros.
