Instagram claimed that due to the latest update to its service, the app was able to share the precise location of iOS device users and claimed it was a viral post.
In recent days, several platform users shared a post warning iPhone users that the new version of Instagram may share their exact location if they post with the ‘Location’ hashtag.
In this way, the application could specify the specific location of the device and therefore the user, instead of specifying a general situation such as a parking lot.
Not only will this go against the platform’s privacy policies, but it will also serve up information to criminals such as thieves, spies or trackers, according to these viral posts.
To clarify the situation, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri reminded via Twitter that the social network’s “location services are a device setting, not a new feature.”
With this, he insisted that the platform not share the location with other people, and directed Twitter users to an Instagram Comms thread explaining how this precise location mode works.
First of all, the social network stated that, like other social networks, it uses location services “for things like location tags and map functions.”
With this, he remembered that users have the ability to voluntarily tag places in their posts if they want to share this information.
