Overview of the French Eryx anti-tank missile system

The Eryx short-range anti-tank missile complex was developed by the French company Aerospatiale. Dynamic protection is designed to defeat modern tanks equipped with armored combat vehicles, as well as bunkers and structures up to 600 meters.

Thanks to the thermal imaging sight, firing from the Eryx ATGM can be carried out not only during the day, but also at night, as well as in conditions of poor visibility. The complex, mounted on a tripod, consists of a transport-launch container with an embedded Eryx anti-tank guided missile (PTKR), a launcher with aiming-launch device, as well as a removable Mirabel thermal sight.

The Eryx guided missile is made according to the original scheme. The main charge of the tandem cumulative warhead is located behind the missile, and the propulsion engine is located in the front. Therefore, jet nozzles are located close to the center of gravity of the ammunition. Finally, it is this that provides increased control and maneuvering accuracy at low speed at close distance to the launcher by changing the direction of the thrust vector.

The tandem cumulative warhead consists of an auxiliary charge with a diameter of 55 mm and a main cumulative charge with a diameter of 135 mm. The total weight of the BZ is 3.9 kg. The location of the main charge at the rear of the PTKR provides the optimal focal distance of the explosion, which increases the effectiveness of the cumulative jet on the target. Therefore, the Eryx missile can penetrate 900 mm of homogeneous steel armor with dynamic protection.

Flight control of the Eryx anti-aircraft missile on trajectory is carried out using gas rudders attached to the engine nozzles. Due to the fact that it is located in front of the main charge, a central pass-through channel is made in the solid thruster controller for the unhindered passage of the cumulative jet. The average flight speed of the Eryx anti-aircraft missile at a range of 600 m is approximately 170 m/s.

Shooting from the ATGM Eryx can be done both from a tripod and from the shoulder. The effective firing range of the Eryx guided missile is 600 m. The missile exceeds the maximum firing range of 600 m in 3.6 seconds.

Stabilization of the missile in flight is carried out by rotating it around the longitudinal axis. Thanks to the so-called soft launch of the Eryx anti-tank missile, it is possible to fire from buildings of a limited volume when the operator is moved at least 3.5 m from the wall. This feature is important when fighting in very urban conditions. The missile is aimed at the target in semi-automatic mode, so the operator only needs to hold the sight mark on the target. The probability of hitting a moving target (at a maximum range of 600 m) is 0.86, and a stationary one is close to 1.0.

Eryx ATGM calculation consists of two people. The first number carries a sighting device on its back and a thermal sight located in a stopper, as well as a tripod if necessary, the second number – two transport-launch containers (TPK) with Eryx anti-tank missiles. If necessary, the Eryx ATGM can be serviced by one person. In this case, it carries a TPK with a launcher, a thermal imager and a missile.

Tactical and technical characteristics of the Eryx ATGM:

  • firing range, m – 50-600
  • Mass of complex with tripod, kg – 15.8
  • rocket mass, kg – 9.8
  • rocket flight speed, m/s – 158
  • the battle part is cumulative
  • weight of the warhead, kg – 3.6
  • armor penetration, mm – from 900 dynamic protection (homogeneous steel plate)
