Already having extensive experience with flexible and foldable screens for smartphones, Now Samsung plans to innovate in the TV segment.

According to information published by The Elec website, this Tuesday (12) a South Korean company is working on simplifying production of QD-OLED displaysused in the brand’s top smart TVs.

As a result QD-OLED panels of the new generation should be thinner and more flexible, something that will even allow folding TVs to be built in the near future. It should be noted that the concept is not entirely new, as brands such as LG have already demonstrated roll-up screens built into furniture at previous CES (Consumer Electronic Shows).

Now it remains to be seen how Samsung plans to implement this differential. Have you ever imagined a portable Smart TV that could be easily carried around like rolled paper?

The key to achieving this flexibility is reducing the number of glass layers used in the substrate of QD-OLED panels. According to the sources, the goal is to keep one layer on the substrate, which is possible while eliminating the layer that does the color conversion for each of the LEDs.

What are the benefits of this technology?

Although details are still scarce, this shift to panel-wafer technology shows that Samsung may be finding new ways to convert colors emitted by screen pixels. This can simplify the entire production chain of TV programs, cost reduction (including for the consumer) and significantly increase the yield (number of products made without defects) of QD-LED technology.

According to SamMobile, if Samsung reaches a 70% profitability level in its production, then in 2022 it will be able to produce more than 880,000 QD-LED panels, which can be used both in the production of Smart TVs and monitors. It is also important to remember that in mid-2021 Samsung itself has already demonstrated flexible and rollable panels, but at a scale more focused on mobile devices.
