South Korea’s Samsung Electronics will invest more than 7 trillion won ($5.02 billion) by 2030 as part of environmental initiatives aimed at making the company carbon neutral by 2050.
As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by the CNA.
The tech giant will use the money to research and develop technologies aimed at filtering greenhouse gases and neutralizing the carbon dioxide produced during chip manufacturing.
Samsung also announced that it has joined a group of global companies that are committed to working with 100% renewable energy sources called “RE100”.
Companies such as Apple, TSMC and Intel have participated in “RE100” before.
With its own carbon neutralization targets, Samsung’s customers and investors have long demanded that the company disclose clearer environmental targets.
According to the company, 15.6 million of the 17.4 million tons of greenhouse gases emitted by Samsung Electronics in 2021, or 90%, was accounted for by its chip and component business, while its mobile device business accounted for 10%.
As reported by Ukrinform, Japanese company Toyota has shifted the deadline from 2050 to 2035 to achieve carbon neutrality in its businesses.
