South Korea refuses to launch satellites on Russian rockets

South Korean authorities have decided to cancel their plans to launch their satellites with the help of Russian rockets against the background of sanctions by the international community on the Russian space program due to the war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

This was reported by Yonhap according to Ukrinform reports.

It is noted that the Korean government plans to launch the Arirang 6 multipurpose satellite using a next-generation medium-sized observation satellite on an Angara-1.2 rocket from Russia’s Plesetsk Cosmodrome and a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and Informatics, which applied to the parliament, draws attention to the fact that it has become difficult to continue launching satellites with the help of Russian rockets due to the sanctions imposed by the international community on the Russian Federation.

The agency also requested an additional $61.1 million from parliament for new satellite launch deals.

The ministry plans to cancel the Russian deals and look for new suppliers if parliament approves the request.

Most likely, as noted, the Korean government will sign deals with SpaceX and the European Space Agency on launches. The terms of the agreements with Russia are confidential.

As reported by Ukrinform, the American company United Launch Alliance (ULA), a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin and carrying out launches in the interests of the Pentagon, will no longer buy Russian RD-180 engines.
