Sony aims to ship two million PlayStation VR 2 headsets by March 2023, despite the global semiconductor component shortage and the global economic crisis. This was reported by the Bloomberg agency. The authors of the publication described the Japanese company’s decision as an “ambitious challenge” to global instability.
Sales of the new VR headset are scheduled to begin in early 2023. At the same time, it is noted that Sony hopes to solve the problems with the supply of components for the PlayStation 5. Both of these stages will be accompanied by a new “marketing move” from the seller.
Analysts find this decision risky because even if Sony manages to solve the chip shortage problem, the company will have to struggle for buyers in the conditions of the global economic crisis that forces people to save. At the same time, according to insiders, the price of the PlayStation VR 2 is comparable to the price of the PlayStation 5, so it will be quite high.
Bloomberg claims that mass production of the PlayStation VR 2 began in September of this year and has yet to face supply chain constraints.
