Asteroid Dimorph, which the American space agency NASA deliberately steered a spacecraft into as part of a test to protect Earth from collisions with space objects, left a 10,000-kilometer-long trail of debris after the collision.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to the BBC.

As noted, the results of the NASA Dart probe’s deliberate collision with Dimorph, a satellite of the asteroid Didymus, were recorded by the Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) ground-based telescope in Chile.

The images show a trail of debris that stretches more than 10,000 kilometers and is expected to stretch further until it completely dissipates and resembles other cosmic dust.

“It’s incredible that we’re able to photograph so clearly the structure and scale of what’s going to happen in the days to come,” said astronomer Teddy Careta, who participated in the research.

According to Michael Knight of the US Naval Research Laboratory, traces of the wreck will be visible in the coming weeks and months.

As reported, on November 24 last year, NASA, in conjunction with SpaceX, successfully launched a Falcon 9 launch vehicle into space with the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission instrument. NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission is the first attempt to test whether it is possible to change the course of a celestial body.

In late September, NASA deliberately guided a spacecraft to an asteroid during testing of the world’s first planetary defense system, designed to prevent possible meteorite collisions with Earth.

The planned collision occurred 10 months after DART’s release.
