Google will fine the state of Arizona $85 million for illegally locating users.
The trial began with a lawsuit filed by Arizona State Attorney Mark Brnovich. He sued Google for violating the state’s Consumer Fraud Act. The tech giant collected data about users’ geolocation on Android even when the feature was turned off.
Even employees talked about problems with the company’s technologies. Even Google’s Jose Castaneda mentioned a bug in the company’s legacy product policy that he says has changed in recent years. In response, and under state law, Google sued Google, claiming that the company’s activities could be considered fraud if it involved advertising or sales. He demanded that the case be dropped, but the judge rejected the request.
As the prosecutor who initiated the case noted, $85 million is the largest amount Google has paid per user for a lawsuit of this scale. Brnovych said he was proud of the process.
“I am proud of this historic agreement that proves that no organization, not even big tech companies, can be above the law,” the prosecutor said.
