Intel Core i9-13900K overclocked to 8.2 GHz in liquid nitrogen: and that’s not the limit

Today, October 7, during the Intel Creator Challenge, legendary overclocker Allen Golibersuch, known by the alias SPLAVE, clearly demonstrated the capabilities of the next generation of Intel Raptor Lake processors in the overclocking space. In fact, in a live stream, the enthusiast managed to overclock the Intel Core i9-13900K processor to 8.2 GHz using LN2 (liquid nitrogen) cooling. At the same time, it is worth noting that although the Intel Core i9-13900K is the flagship processor, it is actually only the most powerful solution from the manufacturer this year – already at the beginning of 2023, the Core i9-13900KS goes on sale, capable of receiving a clock frequency of 6.0 GHz on standard cooling out of the box.

In addition, to achieve a clock frequency as high as 8.2 GHz, the overclocker had to disable all energy efficient cores in the Core i9-13900K processor – only the P cores (Raptor Cove performance cores) worked. As a basis, the ASRock Z790 Taichi motherboard was taken, but in fact, motherboards from this manufacturer are not very common in overclocking in this format. As a result, a maximum voltage of 1,824 V was applied to the processor, while the processor itself was kept at a temperature of -193 C thanks to liquid nitrogen.

Due to such effective cooling and high voltage, the enthusiast managed to set the multiplier to the x82 mark, which at the output showed a clock frequency of 8200 MHz (100 MHz per 1 multiplier). That’s 36% faster than the Core i9-13900KS with a base clock of 200 MHz and 6.0 GHz over the previous record of 8.0 GHz, which was broken some time ago. But most importantly for Intel, the enthusiast fell far behind the 7.5 GHz record set by AMD Zen 4 chips with the same liquid nitrogen. True, the new generation of AMD processors has not yet been specifically used by enthusiasts, so the “blue team” did not have much time to master in this direction.

During the livestream, the overclocker stated that the Core i9-13900K processor still has a small margin of safety, thereby increasing the frequency even more. It looks like new records will be broken in the coming weeks and it is quite possible that users will even reach the coveted 9.0GHz mark on the Core i9-13900KS. Of course, it is a pity that ordinary users do not see such frequencies for a very long time.
