A Brazilian court said on Thursday that a São Paulo judge ordered tech giant Apple to pay $20 million for selling its iPhones without a charger.

Judge Caramuru Afonso Francisco of the 18th Civil Court of Sao Paulo condemned Apple for “abuse”. This is after considering that models 12 and 13 sold without a charger “require the purchase of one product so that another can work”.

The decision, which Apple can appeal, comes after a $2.5 million fine in September by the Justice Department’s consumer protection service. It also banned the US company from selling these models without a charger.

Brazil condemns Apple

When Apple launched the iPhone 12 in October 2020, it stopped including the wall socket charger, citing its “commitment to the environment.”

The court ordered the Californian company to provide chargers to consumers who have purchased the iPhone 12 and 13 in the past two years. That’s why they need to include a charger in the sale of all their models from now on.

It was also determined that the company paid 100 million reais (approximately $20 million) for “social damages”. This is also the amount claimed by the Brazilian Consumer Association (Abmcc), which is the plaintiff in the case.

Brazil isn’t the only place that gives Apple a headache when it comes to chargers.

The European Parliament passed a law last week mandating the use of a single charger with a USB-C port for smartphones, tablets and portable devices from the end of 2024. This measure will force the company to change its models.
