A Brazilian state court in Sao Paulo has fined Apple $19 million for selling iPhone smartphones without a charger. This is reported by Reuters. The court also ruled that the company has to equip new smartphones sold in the country with power adapters and charging cables.

In this case, the plaintiff was the consumer and taxpayer rights protection association that decided that Apple’s rejection of “chargers” in the kit was wrong practice. Apple’s management, for its part, claims that such a move helps reduce carbon emissions and is part of a green initiative. The company plans to appeal the court’s decision.

Apple has refused to equip new iPhones with chargers in 2020, citing “environmental concern”. According to the company, most users already have a power adapter when buying a new device and therefore do not need an additional adapter.
