We are now used to seeing security cameras in every building. Did you know that these devices, which are preferred to provide security, can cause a security problem? Cybersecurity firm ESET researched the considerations before purchasing a security camera.

Security cameras were once a technological device used by the rich and famous. Thanks to technological developments, it has become a technology that everyone can access today. With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), a new huge market has emerged for manufacturers of connected devices and more advanced products. Connected to home Wi-Fi networks, these devices allow device owners to watch live video streams, record video for later viewing, and receive alerts when out of the house. The same features can expose the home they’re used to to new risks if the camera is compromised or images leaked. Not all vendors care enough about security and privacy. So ask the right questions before you buy these cameras.

Do you really need a security camera?

It’s time to decide if a home security camera is really necessary or if you want to buy one because someone else is buying it. Part of this decision making process may include deciding what type of installation to do: do you need a full CCTV system that requires professional installation, or do you need a cheaper connected camera that can be quickly installed and controlled via a smartphone app ?

Are you aware of the security and privacy risks?

While home security cameras are designed to protect the home, owning a security camera can pose a greater risk. In the worst cases, remote or local hackers can access live streams to spy on family members or check the property to see if it is empty. Both scenarios can have unintended consequences. You may also not know that these scenarios are happening. One way for hackers to access these streams is by accessing the home wireless network, perhaps by guessing the Wi-Fi password or brute-forced. But a more likely scenario is an attack where they guess or crack your account passwords or exploit an unpatched firmware vulnerability.

Have you checked the vendor’s security history?

It is important to research the products and reputation of the suppliers. You should go for a reputable brand that has good consumer ratings for security and privacy, and a track record of making reliable products. Things like instant patching, strong encryption, advanced login security, and strict privacy policies are important. What are their powers if engineers need to access a system?

Do you know what happened to the broadcast and the data?

Another potential element of risk relates to the seller. Do you know whether the video data is stored on-premises or in the provider’s cloud data center?

Do you know how to keep your camera safe?

By being aware of the major security and privacy risks, you also have insight into what it takes to keep these devices working safely. Default passwords should always be changed to a strong and unique password. For added security, use two-factor authentication whenever possible. Devices should be regularly updated to the latest firmware. Choose a reputable vendor with a track record of making highly secure devices and offering firmware updates. Viewing video footage remotely gives you peace of mind and reduces the chances of a hacker accessing it.

Do you know how to configure the right smart home settings?

It’s not just about the settings of the camera itself. Your home modem is the gateway to the smart home and can be a source of security risks if not configured correctly. UPnP and port forwarding features that allow devices to find other devices on the same network can be hijacked by hackers to access smart cameras. Therefore, they must be disabled in the modem, although this may prevent some applications and devices from working.

Do you know how to check if the camera has been hacked?

It can be difficult to detect if a security camera has been hacked. Things to consider; abnormal camera movements, strange noises or sounds coming from the camera. If you suddenly can’t log in because your account password has changed, that doesn’t bode well either. Another issue to consider is increased data usage or poor performance. If the device is used by an unauthorized user, your camera may slow down due to limited memory and CPU power. This situation does not give a definitive result. It could also be the result of something more mundane, such as a weak internet connection.

Are you aware of the effects on others?

Buying a home security camera is not just about your security and privacy. If the camera captures images of people outside the walls of your home, it can also affect the rights of your neighbors. Under the GDPR, these people also have privacy rights that must be respected. It’s a good idea to position the cameras to minimize intrusion and capture images of neighbors.
