According to information present in official documents, the US Navy is investing in a new Super Swarm military drone project. The goal is to create a weapon capable of destroying air defense systems with the help of quantity. Super Roy is swarm of small dronesequipped with artificial intelligence capable of performing kamikaze attacks.

The paper has been reviewed by MIT Technology Review and shows how the US Navy is exploring the use of drones on the battlefield. Super Swarm could be launched from multiple platforms such as submarines or aircraft carrying explosives, signal jammers, or weapons for troops.

The document reveals two other initiatives:

  • SUGGESTIONS: an attempt to create a mother ship capable of carrying and launching a swarm of drones
  • WEIGHT: An abbreviation that stands for Large-Scale Autonomous Systems Production and involves the creation of a 3D printer capable of producing cheap disposable drones. The need to build cheap disposable drones is essential when developing a system like the Super Swarm. After all, the larger the swarm, the greater the chance of a successful attack.

Combat drones are becoming more common

The US Navy has been investing in drones for some time, and the Super Swarm project is their latest investment. In addition, the conflict in Ukraine shows the world how drones are developed and used in combat.

There are several examples of drone-caused destruction circulating on the networks, from kamikaze attacks, drones firing molotov cocktails or being used in espionage. As the war progressed, drones became a key part of Russia and Ukraine’s strategy to win the conflict.

Countries such as Iran and China are also testing new technologies and creating drones for military purposes or new autonomous combat technologies. The militarization of drones is in full swing, and the new U.S. investment in drone super swarms is just the latest example.
