Astronomers will use the world’s largest camera to capture 3.2 gigapixel images of space.

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory team of engineers announced that completion of the development of the world’s largest camerawhich will be equipped in the center Vera K. Rubin Observatorywhich is located in northern Chile. This new model should be responsible for continuously photographing the sky and will have a total of 3.2 gigapixels.

Moderation is recommended to avoid escalating issues due to space debris.

These finishing touches to the new sensor are one of the final steps in the construction of the observatory, which has been in the works for about 20 years. Currently, engineers are conducting pre-installation tests of the model and the assembly of the vast majority of components has already been completedincluding 189 CCD sensors.

With a new camera 3.2 gigapixelsobservatory Rubin will collect 20 terabytes of data every night during your operation. The model will be equipped with a 1.6 meter lens and a 7 meter mirror, which will give a viewing angle of 18,000 square degrees, which will allow visualization of 17 billion stars in the Milky Way and 20 billion galaxies.

Although images were not clear James Webb Space TelescopeO Extreme Technology indicates that Rubin’s new sensor does not have the same purpose as the model that is in space. The new camera will take a complete picture of every part of the sky every three days for 10 years. color recording of how objects move and change brightness.

The portal indicates that the new observatory is capable of show details of events on a galactic and local scale, including asteroids approaching Earth. This data will be shared daily with members of the astronomical community who will send out alerts about these objects close to our planet.

Now engineers will conduct the final tests of the world’s largest camera before the beginning of next year, in May 2023 the sensor will be sent by plane to the center Vera K. Rubin Observatory. After that, the model will be assembled and tested on site, with the first observations scheduled for March 2024.
