Traditionally, samples taken from the seafloor during research are tested in laboratories on land. Chen Jun, a researcher at the Institute of Deep Sea Science and Engineering at the ANC, said conducting in situ scientific experiments in deep-sea areas will help prevent samples from being damaged or lost due to environmental changes.

As reported in the ANC, the station will operate autonomously on the seafloor and will be able to monitor and manage its own condition. All data is regularly transmitted to the onshore control center via a deep-sea glider, while researchers will be able to remotely control the research station.

The station’s power system is capable of accumulating 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, which makes it possible to maintain the station’s uninterrupted operation on the seafloor for more than half a year.

During the recently completed mission, the Shenhai Yunshi bathyscaphe, along with its crew, established underwater communication between the base station and the installed laboratory, and conducted a series of tests, such as checking wireless communications and changing the station’s operating modes.

In future missions, the station will be connected to sensing and information transmission systems, as well as for smarter uncrewed experiments.
