COP 27, another waste of time the planet cannot afford

[Opinión] COP27, a new climate summit organized by the United Nations, started taking place in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh. Until November 18, invited leaders from 200 countries, politicians, businessmen, activists and other representatives of civil society will gather at it, and the truth is that – as we see the results of the previous summits – We do not believe it will serve any effective purpose.

The goals of COP 27 will be familiar to you because they are the ones that are repeated over and over again: “take action on certain critical issues to address the climate emergency, from urgently reducing greenhouse gas emissions, building resilience and adapting to the inevitable consequences of climate change, to meeting financial commitments for climate action in developing countries”.

Interviews and more interviews… with no concrete results, with few agreements, fewer commitments and non-compliance. And so it is that if the climate summit begins without some of the biggest polluters on the planet (Russia, China and India) and with another big polluter, the United States, on minimal mode (Joe Biden won’t attend until the end of the week), imagine if it can be used for something. And above with arresting protesters

The recent energy crisis caused by the Putin-initiated war in Ukraine certainly doesn’t help. The record concentrations of greenhouse gases and the increase in extreme weather events are measurable and tangible, and the main goal of this COP27 must be to return (again), restore solidarity between countries to fulfill the historic Paris Agreement, unequivocally exclude the use and production of fossil fuels and increase climate finance from rich countries to countries with fewer resources.

COP 27, is there any hope?

The United Nations issued a warning (another) at the beginning of COP 27: the last eight years have been the warmest on record, and therefore it will be very difficult to achieve the Paris commitment not to exceed 1.5 degrees of temperature increase compared to pre-industrial levels. It won’t be hard, it’s already impossible.

Beyond what we might think in the face of reduced economic activity caused by the coronavirus pandemic, for two years we have added a new and unfortunate dimension to weather, climate and water hazards, with a wide range of combined impacts. to human health and well-being. And now Putin’s war…

COP27

Summer has passed in the Western Hemisphere with unprecedented heat waves due to unstoppable climate change that serious consequences in the socio-economic development of the world; migration and displacement; food security, terrestrial and marine ecosystems as well as human diseases exacerbated by climate change droughts, fires and floods that even the biggest deniers can no longer ignore.

The world is on the brink of an abyss and the truth is that we are doing very little to stop it. Is there any hope that this COP 27 will be of any use? There’s definitely a very small chance that the same guys who got us this far are the ones who pulled us off the cliff. As if he wants to put the fox (always hungry to increase his multi-millionaire interests) to take care of the sheep.

It can be understood that our living system cannot be removed with the stroke of a pen, but considering the warnings “at the edge of the abyss” or “code red” that all scientific reports have given for decades, it would be desirable to follow concrete measures not only to reverse climate change , but also the solution to the greatest global human emergency: to protect the very existence of our species.

We have already crossed all the red lines. No report is needed to conclude that we are destroying the planet and threatening the future survival of humans as well as many species of plants and animals. The responsibility (majority, but not total) that human activities and the economic and living system implemented in recent decades have in this is beyond doubt. The land that welcomes us is fighting back. Either we change now or we are changed by famine, homelessness, disease and displacement on a global scale that will change our world.
