Microsoft begins testing one of Edge’s most requested features

Microsoft seems to be paying a lot of attention to making their apps and services more touchable. The software giant has recently released a compact and tablet-optimized taskbar (currently hidden) for Windows 11 22H2 devices, demonstrating its commitment to optimizing Windows for more touch. Windows isn’t the only one benefiting from Microsoft’s touch efforts.

Microsoft is currently testing a new touch mode for the Edge browser to optimize the browser for touch devices like the Microsoft Surface Pro. While parts of the Edge interface are already well optimized for touch devices, this is the first time we’ve seen a dedicated UI designed for touch devices. Since the end of Edge Legacy, Edge users have been clamoring for improved touchscreen support.

When you turn on touch mode, all browser elements are slightly enlarged. According to the feature description, browser elements like buttons and tabs increase in size when you enable it. If you’re using Edge on a converting computer, you can select Automatic from the Touch Mode drop-down menu. Therefore, Edge will recognize if you are using Windows with touch and suggest the appropriate layout for you.

Microsoft is currently testing this feature on the Edge Canary channel. However, we haven’t been able to access it yet, which means it may be available to select users for now. If you’re lucky, you can make Edge better for touch by going to: Settings > Appearance > Touch.
