Amazon has lofty and long-standing ambitions for drone deliveries, and over the years we’ve seen this translate into constant adjustments to the vehicles that will deliver them. The company today unveiled its latest delivery aircraft, Prime Air, which it says is lighter, quieter, and capable of operating in the rain.
Since first introducing the idea of drone delivery in 2013, Amazon has built more than two dozen prototypes and conducted trials in the US, UK and Canada. Earlier this year, the company unveiled a drone called the MK27-2, which has a unique hexagonal body that is claimed to provide greater stability in the air. This drone will be used in future delivery trials in California and Texas, which are expected to begin later this year. But the company is looking further and unveiling the successor to the MK27-2, which it calls the MK30.
This drone is said to be lighter and smaller, but will have increased range, improved safety features and interestingly capable of flying in light rain. The company’s previous drones weren’t designed to be waterproof, but this suggests that the latest will have some resistance to H20, allowing it to deliver more often.
Introduced earlier in the year, the MK27-2 allegedly features specially designed propellers that minimize high-frequency sound waves. Amazon claims its engineers have further refined the design of these propellers to reduce the MK30’s noise by an additional 25%.
