Microsoft has resolved a known issue that was causing connectivity issues for Windows customers using the DirectAccess service to access their organization remotely without using a virtual private network (VPN). According to Redmond, DirectAccess may not automatically reconnect after an infected device experiences connection problems. Scenarios that can cause this known issue include switching between access points or Wi-Fi networks and temporarily losing network connectivity.
The issues affect enterprise endpoints where administrators have deployed Windows updates since mid-October. However, this issue should not affect other remote access solutions such as VPN (sometimes called Remote Access Server or RAS) and Always On VPN (AOVPN), which are recommended remote connection methods for Windows 10 or later. Corporate or home devices that do not use DirectAccess to access corporate resources remotely are also unaffected.

Microsoft has addressed this issue with Rollback Known Issues (KIR), a Windows feature that allows you to undo non-security-related faulty Windows fixes released through Windows Update. After a patch is submitted, released KIRs typically reach all consumer and unmanaged business devices within 24 hours, and affected users are advised to reboot affected systems to speed deployment.
IT administrators should install and configure the KIR group policy associated with the Windows versions of the system to resolve the known issue on enterprise Windows devices.

The procedure for deploying KIR patches via Group Policy requires opening the Group Policy Editor and going to Local Computer Policy or Domain Policy on the domain controller to select the version of Windows you want to target.
