The updated Twitter Blue was launched early last week, finally suspending the possibility of new subscriptions. Users began to buy blue teak en masse and impersonate famous brands and individuals, affecting their reputation and share price.
What happened?
We remind you that now having a blue tick on the account does not mean that you are looking at the official page of a company or a famous person.
Under the new rules, anyone can get such a mark by paying for a Twitter Blue subscription. In fact, the blue checkmark is now a sign of paid users. The closest analogy can be drawn with Telegram, where paid users have a star or other icon next to their name.
Instead, official Twitter pages will now have a gray and unobtrusive “Official” tag below their nickname. However, this new feature did not appear immediately and was temporarily disabled a day after its launch due to privacy concerns.
Such changes, combined with the 90-day deadline the social network has given its official pages to purchase Twitter Blue (otherwise they’ll kill the tick), has created great chaos. Users did not spare $ 8 and started buying subscriptions in bulk by getting blue ticks. After that, they changed the name of their page pretending to be someone else.
It is unclear how long this pause will last and what changes the company will make to its subscription system to combat such serious trolling. According to the official announcement, the “Official” gray sign was supposed to restart on Friday, but it still doesn’t appear.
