Google will pay $391.5 million to settle a 40-state lawsuit alleging that the search and advertising giant illegally tracked users’ locations.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters.

The Iowa attorney general’s office stressed that the company needs to be more transparent with consumers about when location tracking occurs. It should also provide users with detailed information about location tracking data on a dedicated web page.

“When consumers decide not to share location data on their devices, they must be able to trust that a company will no longer track their every move,” Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said in a statement.

He said the agreement made it clear that companies must be transparent about how they track customers and comply with state and federal privacy laws.

On Monday, Google said on its blog that it will “make updates to give it even more control and transparency over location data” in the coming months.

The agency said prosecutors began the investigation in 2018 after reports that Google was recording location data.

The investigation revealed that the company had been misleading consumers about location tracking apps since at least 2014, in violation of state consumer protection laws.

Google had $111 billion in ad revenue in the first half of this year, more than any other online ad vendor. Consumer location is an important factor in helping an advertiser overcome digital clutter to make ads more relevant and capture consumer attention.
