SwiftKey returns to iOS

If you’re an iOS user, you’ll remember that SwiftKey said goodbye less than two months ago. In a decision the reasons for which we will never know, Microsoft has decided to end the life cycle of this smart keyboard in its version for the operating system of Apple devices. It wasn’t a big surprise since the folks at Redmond didn’t update it for about a year, but it was still a big disappointment for its users (myself included) because it was a decision that only affected iOS, since the Android version was still fully active.

Thus ended eight years of life between them the arrival of SwiftKey on iOS, six of them were under the Microsoft umbrella, who bought the company two years later. As I said at the time, it seemed like a very smart move on Microsoft’s part, because in this way it acquired a very important asset to increase its presence in the Apple OS (and of course also in Google) and, in addition, with the product that it had (and still has) extremely positive evaluation in its field. In the case of iOS, for example, it is the most valued of the virtual keyboards present in the App Store with a score of 4.6 out of 5.

All of this made it all the more puzzling that Microsoft stopped updating SwiftKey for iOS. without notice and for no apparent reasonand even more than a year later, last September, decided to remove it from the app store, ending its support as of October 5. Users had the option to download and install it before that date to be able to use it after that date, but of course there will be no updates of any kind, not even security, something key for a keyboard that by its very nature, has access to everything , which the user enters.

So it seemed like a bad decision and luckily it looks like they figured it out. Vishnu Nath, vice president and general manager of OneNote and the Microsoft Office product group, posted message on his Twitter account, on which cConfirm the return of SwiftKey to iOS and not only that, it is also accompanied by a rather promising statement, «see what the team has in store«, which we can interpret to mean that soon there will be news on the keyboard.

And this is most necessary… although this news is simply to update it. And yes, SwiftKey has returned to the iOS App Store, but At the moment version 2.9.2 is still availablethat is, the one that was published already in September 2021. However, it will be interesting to follow the latest news from its version for Android, because it is possible that we will see it on iOS as well.
