Blackout in Ukraine: how long will the mobile network last without light

According to Oleksandr Komarov, a month ago the company recorded about 6,000 network outages for any reason, but there were 43,000 of them after the attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The main reason for this is electricity loss.

no mobile connection

Head of “Kyivstar” He considers it unlikely that communication across Ukraine will disappear for a long time. The situation will, of course, depend on how the energy system will hold up. However, when the connection is available on some kind of “islands”, the network is much more likely to turn into point coverage: in some areas it is available, in others it is not.

We can see this now in the example of Kyiv, where entire neighborhoods with large numbers of residents are closed, and mobile and fixed communications disappear in a matter of hours. But this does not mean that all Kiev is uncommunicative,
– says Komarov.

It also cites the regions of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv and Poltava as the most vulnerable cities.

How much

In the event of an emergency power outage, the base grid will operate as long as there is fuel in the generators providing backup power. Technological sites are equipped with batteries, the operating time of which depends on age. It can be between 1.5 and 4 hours maximum. However, this time is significantly reduced with increasing load.

Why is the network slowing down?

Users may notice that after a power outage, mobile Internet immediately begins to disappear. It works slow at first and then gets worse. Oleksandr Komarov explains it by load:

Because at the moment, the number of people who want to use the services of this site (technological platform – channel 24) is increasing irregularly. Network loads would usually peak, for example, on New Year’s, when traffic increased by 30-40%. And that’s how the network is built – it must withstand such peak loads. As we are currently observing, when mass critical power outages occur, the load increases many times over,

blackout

In the event of a power outage, the base stations connected to the generators will be able to work as long as there is fuel.

For example, in March, Chernihiv was under siege for almost a month, it was under bombardment, and the city was always without electricity. Despite this, Kyivstar’s 14 base stations were powered by diesel generators there.
– says Komarov.

As soon as power is restored, the stations will continue to operate.
