British company Rolls-Royce has announced the successful launch of a hydrogen-powered aircraft engine, a first in the world aviation industry.
As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters.
The ground test was conducted using a converted Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A regional aircraft engine that uses green hydrogen produced by wind and tidal energy.
Rolls and test program partner EasyJet aim to demonstrate that hydrogen can safely and efficiently power civil aviation engines.
Both companies have already said they are planning a second series of tests with long-term goals for flight testing.
Hydrogen is one of the technologies that could help the aviation industry meet its target of “zero” carbon emissions by 2050.
As reported by Ukrinform, Finland plans to build a giant 300-megawatt hydrogen production plant in the city of Kokkola.
