On a 4.4-centimeter-long ellipse is inscribed “Triumph of Heracles and Hauron (Hauronas)” in ancient Greek.
Professor Yulia Ustinova of Ben-Gurion University, who deciphered this inscription, explains that in the Hellenistic period Hercules and Hauron were considered the divine guardians of Yavni.
According to him, this is the first documentary confirmation of the existence of such a patronage, discovered on the territory of the city itself.
Previously, evidence of the veneration of this goddess was known only from a written source discovered on the Greek island of Delos.
A lead bullet for a slingshot was probably included in the equipment of a Greek warrior. Similar shells were common in the ancient world from the 5th century BC. However, only a few specimens of this kind have been discovered in Israel so far, but this is the first inscribed specimen.
As Ustinova explains, the inscriptions served to raise morale, frighten the enemy, and also “magically feed” the sling’s killing power.
The discovery was made during excavations carried out by the Department of Antiquities in an area allocated by the Land Administration for the future expansion of the city (12,000 residences are planned to be built here).
Archaeologists in eastern China’s Jiangsu province have discovered 1.5 tons of coins belonging to the reigns of the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties, Ukrinform reported.
