The American company SpaceX has launched into orbit 40 OneWeb satellites, a network of Internet satellites that rival the Starlink system.

This is reported by Ukrinform with reference to Space.com.

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying 40 OneWeb satellites took off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on December 8 at 17:27 local time.

The landing of Falcon 9’s first stage marked the 145th successful launch of a SpaceX rocket, and the fourth for this launch vehicle specifically, the newspaper wrote.

OneWeb is building an array of 648 low-Earth orbit satellites to rival SpaceX’s Starlink to some extent. More than 460 OneWeb spacecraft are currently in orbit.

The company is said to be backing its rival after plans to launch OneWeb were derailed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Most were launched on Russian Soyuz rockets operated by the French company Arianespace. However, this arrangement was broken after Russia invaded Ukraine in February. After that, OneWeb made agreements with SpaceX and New Space India Limited (NSIL).
