Apple accused of planned obsolescence again

The stories about Apple resorting to planned obsolescence of the iPhone will never end. The Association Halte à l’Obsolescence Programmetée (HOP) has filed a complaint against the company, both with the above app and accusing Apple of preventing smartphones from being repaired more easily.

To begin with, the complaint focuses on the serialization problem. It’s a common practice from Apple when the company links the serial numbers of different components of the device together. In this way, the company limits the possibilities of self-repair and repair in unauthorized centers, because if the part is replaced with an unsuitable smartphone, it will not work. Also, the association talks about cases where the same original parts were used during the repair, but smartphones did not work. There have also been cases where the device was working normally after repair but performance deteriorated after another iOS update. This was true even on many iPhone XR after updating to iOS 16.

In total, the 60-page complaint filed by HOP contains several key points: commercial practices and misleading torts equivalent to planned obsolescence. At the same time, unfortunately, there is no freely available private data on planned aging. However, it can be recalled that Apple had to pay for the decline in iPhone performance over time. At the time, the company had expressed its desire to maintain this autonomy.
