As part of the changes, users will be able to download third-party software to their iPhone and iPad without using the company’s App Store.
The company’s moves are in response to EU laws aimed at leveling the playing field for third-party developers and improving consumers’ digital lives. Regulators and software makers have complained for years that Apple and Google control the two biggest mobile app stores and have too much power in the market.
A major new European law, called the Digital Markets Act, will take effect in the coming months, but companies don’t have to comply with all the rules until 2024.
The law requires tech companies to allow third-party apps to be installed and make it easier for users to access basic device settings. The rules require messaging services to work together and third-party developers to have equal access to core features in apps and services.
The changes apply to technology companies with a market capitalization of at least 75 billion euros ($80 billion) and at least 45 million monthly users in the EU.
The changes are expected to affect only the European market at first, but experts believe that other countries may enact similar laws later on.
