According to The Wall Street Journal, Delta Airlines has begun testing SpaceX’s Starlink satellites for broadcasting on-board Wi-Fi.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian told The Wall Street Journal that the airline is conducting “research trials” on Starlink technology, but did not provide further details.
SpaceX plans to send 42,000 satellites into low Earth orbit as part of the Internet’s mega-constellation. Satellites are designed to provide broadband Internet to remote parts of the world. SpaceX has launched 2335 satellites into orbit so far.
SpaceX is reportedly in talks with several airlines to provide on-board Wi-Fi. In June 2021, SpaceX vice president at Starlink, Jonathan Hofeller, announced at the Connected Aviation Intelligence Summit that the company plans to move into commercial interests by the end of the year.
