Windows Notepad itself is one of the applications included in the operating system that users appreciate the most. Whether it’s due to its seniority, its versatility (from writing down a shopping list to checking code) or its more than distinctive design (which got an interesting facelift over a year ago), oz is one of those programs that we’ve all used on more occasions than we care to remember.
Although many people agree on the dating of the creation of Notepad in November 1985, with the introduction of Windows 1.0 it is true that its development is earlier. The first version of Notepad was introduced in 1983 at COMDEX as a multipurpose notepad for MS-DOS with mouse support that accompanied the Microsoft Mouse, Redmond’s first mouse, selling for $195 at its debut.
Since then, it is true that even its interface has not evolved much, it has not even been adapted to the graphical interface of each version of Windows that has seen the light of day since then. But what would otherwise be highly criticized has paradoxically turned out to be an advantage for many of its users, who greatly appreciate the simple design with four basic controls and a menu. 3D? Shaded? Smoothed shapes? Thanks, but no thanks, better design as minimalistic as Seat Panda’s dashboard.
Now there are changes and changes and personally this one seems to be successful because according to what we can read in MSPowerUser a Microsoft employee accidentally revealed that Notepad would have tabs. And it’s not that he said that, no, it’s that he published an image in which we can see in great detail the appearance of the Notepad, which is already being tested in Microsoft’s offices. And yes, you read that right, the screenshot itself indicates that this feature is confidential and therefore you should not talk about it or take screenshots. The tweet was deleted after a few minutes, but of course that was more than enough time for many users to download and save the image.
This tabbed notebook isn’t available on any of the Windows 11 Insider channels yet, so we shouldn’t expect it anytime soon. However, it makes sense to hope that it will eventually materialize sometime in 2023, for the insiders perhaps during the first months of the year, and at the end of it with either Windows 11 23H2 or one of the future Moments.
