Microsoft adds an “environmental” mode of operation to Xbox

As part of its strategy to achieve a negative carbon emission level, Microsoft Corporation has added a Shutdown mode to Xbox Series X and S consoles, where devices consume up to 20 times less electricity.

It is noted that the shutdown can be manually enabled on consoles. Later, Microsoft plans to make it the default mode.

Shutdown is an analogue of the “sleep” mode, which is characterized by a significant reduction in power consumption. Savings are achieved thanks to special mechanisms for downloading and installing updates in the background.

Microsoft assures that using the new functionality on two consoles throughout the year allows reducing the amount of carbon emissions comparable to the amount it takes 10 years to process a tree.

Microsoft will start enabling Shutdown mode on standard consoles starting January 12, 2023. Beta testers will notice the first change. In the future, the IT giant will expand the new app to all users. Microsoft also said it’s working on rolling out the feature on Xbox One series consoles.
