airBaltic will launch free Starlink internet on all aircraft
In this way, all passengers will be able to use internet access as soon as they board the plane. The service will be provided both on the ground and in-flight.
This is a historic moment for our airline and the industry as a whole. airBaltic will soon be the first airline in Europe to launch high-speed, unlimited and free satellite internet on board, – said the general manager Martin Gauss.
The operator of Starlink, which is Elon Musk’s company SpaceX, will provide a 350 Megabit channel for each plane. That is, if all 145 passengers on the plane start using the internet at the same time, each will receive a 2.4 Megabit channel. This is enough for video streaming or even broadcasting.
The antenna to be installed on the aircraft will communicate with SpaceX satellites, which are currently used to provide Starlink service on the ground. In this way, access to the network will be possible on the plane.
When will Starlink be released on airBaltic?
airBaltic is said to be working with SpaceX to obtain the required STC (supplementary type certification) approval.
Certification must demonstrate that the equipment does not affect aircraft systems and is safe to operate.
The carrier and SpaceX’s product airBaltic are expected to begin installing the entire Airbus A220-300 fleet this year.
