Samsung today officially announced its latest 200 megapixel camera sensor called the Samsung ISOCELL HP2. The premium smartphone camera sensor has advanced pixel technology and full capacity to create stunning mobile images. The company also announced that the 200-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL HP2 camera sensor has entered mass production, implying that it could be equipped with the upcoming Galaxy S23 series flagship smartphones.
The ISOCELL HP2 camera sensor contains 200 million 0.6 micrometer (µm) pixels in 1/1.3-inch optical format, the sensor size commonly used in 108-megapixel mainstream smartphone cameras. With this, customers will be able to produce higher resolutions on the latest high-end smartphones without major camera bumps on the devices.
It can adapt to different light levels with Tetra2pixel. In low light conditions, the sensor transforms into a 50-megapixel 1.2µm sensor or a 12.5-megapixel 2.4µm sensor, connecting four to 16 adjacent pixels. For 8K video at about 33MP, the sensor switches to 50MP 1.2μm mode to minimize clipping, 8K video at 30fps, wide field of view and larger pixel size can produce clear, cinematic videos.
Samsung is also introducing a DSG feature for the first time in 50MP mode, which applies two different conversion values to the analog signal received at the pixel level. There’s also Smart-ISO Pro, an HDR solution that combines different ISO levels in a single exposure and allows the camera to shoot 12.5MP images and 4K videos at 60fps in HDR.
The sensor uses Super QPD in low-light conditions, where all 200 million pixels are used for focusing, to provide faster and more accurate autofocus. It also features fast autofocus, and the new Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) technology can also reduce image blur in brightly lit environments.
While the company has confirmed that the ISOCELL HP2 sensor has entered mass production, Samsung has not revealed a shipping date or a list of smartphones that will feature this new sensor. However, it will most likely be powered by the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, which will be introduced in a few weeks.
