Samsung introduces new 200MP ISOCELL HP2 camera sensor

ISOCELL HP2 is a new sensor developed by Samsung for the next generation of high-end mobile phones. It stands out with its huge resolution 200 megapixels and it is likely to be one of the star features of the Galaxy S23 smartphones that will be unveiled on February 1.

The possibility of photography and video It is one of the most important features to consider when buying a smartphone today. And it’s logical. Its versatility has sunk sales of dedicated compact cameras, and some of its benefits have shifted to mobile phones. Although still incomparable to a good dedicated camera, all manufacturers have been improving this component and the truth is that current mobiles generally take very good photos.

Samsung focused on this development improve the detail of shots and also their ability to work in any lighting conditions. The amount of light is crucial to taking a good picture, and many mobile phones struggle when the lighting is low. For example, in night photography.

Size matters here. Although it must always be accompanied by good optics and mobile software capable of taking advantage of it, the new sensor’s 200 million 0.6 micrometer pixels are a great starting point. In optical format 1/1.3”, it maintains the same physical size as the 108MP sensors. This means that you will not have to increase the protrusion where the main camera is located, thus maintaining a better aesthetic.

Like other high-resolution sensors, the ISOCELL HP2 can do this combine pixels for best performance based on available light. For example, the sensor can switch to 50 MP 1.2 micrometer or 12.5 MP 2.4 micrometer mode to collect more light and perform better in low light. Improved autofocus is also dedicated to this goal. As we said above, lack of light is a problem with mobile cameras.

Its performance in brightly lit environments has also been improved thanks to what Samsung calls technology Dual vertical transmission gate and that it aims to reduce overexposure and improve color reproduction. The company has also improved HDR performance with features like Smart-ISO Pro and DSG. The sensor will enable recording 8K video at 30 frames per second.

In its presentation, Samsung states that the ISOCELL HP2 has entered the mass production phase. It is logical that this sensor will debut in the high-end Galaxy S23 Ultra, which we will officially meet at Galaxy Unboxed which will take place in a few weeks.
