The rapid spread of electric vehicles in Germany needs to be carefully analyzed. At the moment, about 900,000 cars of this segment are registered in the country, about 1 million heat pumps are in operation. At the same time, 48 million cars and 20 million heating systems are in operation. In numbers, approx. 2% fleet and 5% heaters electrified, and even then the local power grid may collapse.

Muller, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, a nationwide German newspaper, explained: “If new heat pumps and charging stations continue to be installed, then overload problems and local power outages in the distribution network should be feared if we do not act.”

Low voltage local networks are of the greatest concern. Aiming mitigate the negative impactthe regulator is studying measures to ration electricity for heat pumps and electric vehicle charging stations during times of high grid demand.

Electricity rationing plans are expected to come into effect in early 2024.

If the explained plans apply, the rationing will take effect from January 1, 2024; however, chargers and heaters do not turn off completely. Muller added: “We want to always guarantee a minimum stock.”

Private charging stations, despite restrictions, will be able to use enough electricity to recharge an electric car for up to three hours, three o’clockproviding autonomy in 50 km. Therefore, it remains only to wait to observe the impact of the new standards.
