Facial pareidolia is the human tendency or illusion to see facial structure in everyday objects, such as the “man in the moon” or the face of Jesus on a toast. But here’s what a newly discovered crater on Mars could be a case of “falling adoilium.”

Undeniably, the crater looks like a bear’s face. With the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s High Resolution Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera, we’ve seen some crazy craters on Mars over the years, like the famous smiley face or elephant and bird.

But what could have created the strange bear face-shaped feature in the middle of the crater?

“There is a hill with a V-shaped subsidence structure (nose), two craters (eyes), and a circular fault pattern (head),” said HiRISE principal investigator Alfred McEwan. “The circular pattern of the fault can be attributed to the accumulation of sediments over a buried impact crater. Maybe the nose is a volcanic or muddy vent, and the deposits flow lava or mud? Maybe just smile and fold.”

I think one day we’ll have to go to Mars and explore this crater to find out exactly why it looks like a bear.

I’m pretty sure we’ll be using maps created from HiRISE data to navigate. Without such a map it would be impossible to erect it and we would quickly embark on such an adventure and the rest of the journey would be unbearable.
