In Brazil, solar panels are not widely used in homes. However, its use in industry has grown, even more so because of the environmental incentives they receive or the conservation goals they have to meet. These solar cell discoveries were published in the journal Applied Physics Letters in April 2022. And they go beyond the development of new panels, but also show that panels that are already in use, assembled and working can be modified to receive this update and generate energy also at night and in the dark.
With a total of 678,000 generators installed in the country, it is ranked 14th in the global manufacturing rankings.
This process of updating solar panels is called radiative cooling. When the sun sets, the Earth cools and releases heat into the air. This creates a temperature difference between the air and the surface of the panels. According to the researchers, installing thermoelectric generators in the panel will allow the use of energy generated by radiative cooling.
Similar innovations have already appeared before, for example, the “anti-solar panel” from researchers from University of California. They have not received much publicity and distribution because the estimated energy output is low, around 25% of what they can generate on a typical sunny day.
But research is moving forward, and the more options the better, especially as solar panels became more affordable and more of the population could opt for the technology.
