Implementation 5G in Brazil apparently goes by leaps and bounds. However, this may be contrary to local laws. According to the Connect 5G survey, 10 out of 26 Brazilian cities with a population of over 500,000 (excluding capital cities) do not have antenna laws ready to fully receive the new network..
Connect 5G is a telecom operator’s project to spread the word about the technology’s adoption in Brazil. They explain that, according to the public notice of the introduction of 5G in Brazil, with the service of all capitals by July 2025, it is the turn of cities with a population equal to or greater than 500,000 inhabitants.
Legislative changes are considered important for technology development because, while the Union is responsible for installing antennas, many cities place restrictions on this type of equipment under land use and occupation laws.
It is worth recalling that the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has already given permission for the activation of 5G in these municipalities. However, the start schedule is still subject to compliance with local laws. Connect 5G has published a list of cities that need a new law:
According to Conecta 5G, 12 more municipalities with a population of more than 500,000 have a specific law on this issue, but the texts still have to comply with the General Antenna Law. This is the case:
“The sector sees the adequacy of municipal antenna legislation as the basis for 5G expansion.“said Marcos Ferrari, executive president of Conexis Brasil Digital.
This week, Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency) reported that 78 more Brazilian cities should start receiving a signal from the new clean 5G network in the 3.5 GHz band. Most of the small and medium-sized municipalities that received early access to the technology are in the state of São Paulo, but the cities of Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Para, Espirito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul, Parana, Pernambuco, Rio de -Janeiro Janeiro and Bahia are also on the list. See the link for the full list.
It is worth noting that at the moment, 140 cities have already been released to use the 3.5 GHz band, in which autonomous 5G operates. According to Anatel, up to 1,610 cities in the country are expected to be allowed to roll out the new mobile network in the country by the end of the semester.
