The German “Technical Supervision Association” (Technischer Uberwachungsverein, TUV) annually publishes its car reliability rating – TUV Report. The AvtoVzglyad portal extracted information from the latest edition useful to Russian car owners.
Throughout the year, TUV collects information from thousands of dealers and auto repair shops about defects on all car models in the country. Note that we are not talking about the expected (and taken into account in the maintenance instructions) problems. Experts are interested in “unplanned” technical problems that come to light both by themselves and during regular maintenance. The data is summarized, analyzed and based on that the reliability score of specific vehicles is built.
Here they are ranked according to the percentage of unplanned failures recorded for each of them. The higher the percentage, the lower the car ranks. It is clear that the data from the TUV report 2023 is not fully useful for domestic car owners. If only because the Russian fleet lacks a number of models common in Germany. However, there are many overlaps. In this material, we’ve gathered those who were at the very bottom of the TUV Report study. That is, the most fragile, most often found in the gas station. Like TUV, we have grouped them by age.
Let’s start with cars 2-3 years old. The most unreliable even in the greenhouse conditions of German roads were the “French”. In addition, Dacia Logan (a copy of Renault Logan) performed the worst of all. Some damage was found in 11.6% of the cars. Dacia Dokker (Renault Dokker) has a slightly better result – 10.8% of failures. Citroën C3 Aircross took third place in the fresh car anti-rating with 9.4% broken vehicles in the fleet.
Among 4-5 year olds, Dacia Duster (Renault Duster) stood out with the lowest reliability – a whopping 18% of unplanned visits to gas stations. The BMW 2-er Active Tourer performs slightly better with a bounce rate of 16.7%. The car is rare for Russia, but sometimes comes across. The rest of the weather from these models scored significantly less bad “points”, so we will not mention them in this regard.
In the category of 6-8 years, “renault nestlings” again excelled – the same Duster and Dokker with 24.4% failures. BMW 5s / 6s sedans ‘joined them – 23.8% of the problem cars.
Among the most unreliable cars 8-9 years old, the carriers of the Renault nameplate again lead by a wide margin over other participants in the rating. Logan is the worst here – 32.9% of cars were characterized by technical problems. The Duster fares slightly better – “only” 28.4% of crossovers of this model require repair.
The main conclusion from the 2023 TUV report is the same: you bought a used Renault of any age – get ready to constantly repair it. And the further, the more often.
