New propellers could make drones less noisy

What do you think of the new drone propellers that don’t make as much noise or buzz in your head? Well, worry, because they are already over the horizon.

The drone market has expanded its portfolio and attracted more users to use these devices. With well-diversified demand, new technologies and solutions become necessary to meet the expectations not only of buyers but also of regulators. And quieter propellers are definitely a factor to be developed and implemented in future projects.

New less noisy propellers for drones

A group of researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – always them – is developing new low-noise propellers to make today’s multi-rotor drones less noisy. The design of patented propellers that, without sacrificing the thrust of the drone, reduces the noises and noises emitted by the device, which, instead of an annoying hum, will be nothing more than a strong breeze.

These new donut-shaped toroidal propellers consist of two blades that intertwine so that the tip of one blade curves back towards the other. Its design minimizes the effect of vortices generated at the ends of the blades and increases the overall rigidity of the propeller, resulting in a significant reduction in the sound emitted by the aircraft.

The toroidal propeller from one of the R&D 100 Award-winning labs features a unique closed-form propeller design that makes it a much quieter alternative to the multi-rotor propellers commonly used in commercial drones.

Doctor. Thomas Sebastian, Senior Member of the Structural and Thermal Fluids Development Group at Lincoln Lab, explained that the design of these low-noise propellers was developed for experimental aircraft of the early 1900s and those used during World War II. “There were some designs that were basically these annular wings. So I imagined what it would be like if you took a round wing and turned something like that into a propeller.

These propellers have been tested on drones from DJI and the researchers found that thrust and power levels were similar to conventional propellers on these models, but the sound produced was much smaller, making the drone appear to be twice as far away as it actually is.

New propellers that produce less noise are a welcome innovation for this market. bodies such as Aviation Safety Agency of the European Union (EASA) have specific recommendations on the use of drones and the disruption they can cause to communities or wildlife. In the case of quieter drones, some parameters of these recommendations may be changed in the future.
