On Monday, February 6, it’s been five years since SpaceX caught the world’s attention with Elon Musk’s decision to launch his own Tesla Roadster into space.

According to tracking site Whereisroadster.com, on the anniversary of its founding, it had completed about three-quarters of its orbit around the Sun and was located about 327 million km from Earth. The Roadster has traveled more than 4 billion kilometers in space. In 2020, a vehicle approached Mars for the first time, passing within 8 million km of the planet, which is about 20 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.

It is difficult to determine with certainty whether the car is intact or not. It may have been damaged or destroyed by a meteorite.

Prior to the launch in 2018, SpaceX loaded various Easter eggs into the vehicle. Behind the wheel was a spacesuit-clad mannequin nicknamed Starman, and on the dashboard was a sign that said “Don’t Panic”, a reference to the famous sci-fi story “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, and signed with the names of thousands of SpaceX employees.

A 2018 paper estimates that the probability of a car colliding with Earth in the next 15 million years is about 22%. There is a 12% chance of hitting Venus or the Sun.
