Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a structure of vertical micro-LEDs, and this could be the next step for screens in the future. By stacking them like transistors, a new pattern was created in which multicolored columnar pixels appeared. Each of the speakers is capable of producing a density of 5,000 pixels per inch – the highest modern technology ever recorded.

Just for comparison, Samsung’s OLED screen can only render 500 pixels per inch. Even the VR glasses don’t exceed 1000, which makes the achievement even more impressive. While this is an incredible discovery, the group still has no intention of commercializing it for the market.

The person in charge of the experiment, Jihwan Kim, a professor who specializes in high performance membranes, says there are a few more steps to take before thinking about it. He rather understands how voltage changes colors, as he admits that it will be difficult to create a control matrix for 25 million individual LEDs and a system will be needed for this function.

Difficulty with LED

In addition, Kim said that it is currently very difficult to establish the production of such materials. The use of micro-LEDs, which use diodes 100 times smaller than conventional ones, are made in matrices of red, blue and green colors. They need to be aligned with extreme precision, further increasing costs and waste. According to the information provided by his team, if even one of them is off-axis, the entire panel can be ejected.

The study, published by the professor on the Nature website, defines the team’s research to improve the way microLEDs are made and save resources. It brings together 40 articles and can be read in its entirety on the official website, along with additional papers that show how working effectively can improve our relationship with screens in the future.
