Starliner: a next-generation spaceship

The Boeing Starliner spacecraft is one of two systems designed to transport NASA astronauts into space. CST-100 Starliner has made two unmanned flights so far, one has failed International Space station (ISS) is another one that achieves all its main targets as planned in 2019 and in 2022. astronaut crew NASA It is intended for a test mission no earlier than April 2023.

Meanwhile, missions to the ISS are carried out by the Crew. Dragon from SpaceXCertified for flights in 2020. Both SpaceX and Boeing receive funding from NASA’s Commercial Crew Program (CCP), which was first announced in 2014.

The Starliner is similar in shape to NASA’s Apollo spacecraft, but this new commercial spacecraft has half a century of advanced electronics. At 14.8 feet (4.5 meters) at its widest point, the rubber drop-shaped spacecraft will fly into space for the first time with Atlas V rockets.

The spacecraft is designed to carry seven astronauts, and additional cargo is possible if fewer astronauts fly during a given mission. Funding for the development and construction of the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft came primarily through Boeing’s partnership with NASA’s CCP. Boeing and SpaceX have previously received several grants from NASA’s Commercial Crew Development Program.

The program has funded and studied many companies over the years, and in 2014 Boeing and SpaceX were selected to launch astronauts. Previously, NASA conducted the flights of most astronauts with its own help. space shuttle and selected commercial partners for the next-generation spacecraft following the termination of the shuttle program in 2011 after 30 years of service. By the way, the agency trusted the Russians The Soyuz spacecraft will launch NASA astronauts, paying millions of dollars for a seat until selected suppliers are ready.

According to the CCP, as of May 2020, NASA has allocated approximately $3.1 billion to SpaceX for the development of the Crew Dragon spacecraft and approximately $4.8 billion to Boeing for the development of the Starliner. NASA plans to operate the ISS by 2030 if all partners agree, and has allocated 14 crewed missions to SpaceX for transportation. As of June 1, 2022(opens in a new tab) and six to Boeing.
