US extradite former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo

The Peruvian prosecutor’s office said that the US authorities allowed the extradition of former President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), accused of corruption.

The State Ministry, “as the central authority in extradition matters,” said it was working with national and foreign authorities for the necessary coordination in connection with the forthcoming implementation of his extradition.

Peruvian authorities claim that Toledo received bribes from construction company Odebrecht.

The former president denies asking for or receiving bribes in exchange for the company winning a tender to work on the Inter-Ocean Highway.

Several tax charges of criminal conspiracy and money laundering fall on Toledo.

In November 2022, the Peruvian prosecutor’s office requested 35 years in prison in the case of the fourth section of the Inter-Ocean Highway. Previously, for the second and third sections of the Interoceanic Highway, they asked for 20 years and 6 months in prison; and 16 years and 8 months in the so-called Ekotev case.

Since 2018, Lima has requested the extradition of Toledo from Washington in order to respond to the charges attributed to him.

California State Judge Thomas Hickson confiscated Toledo’s diplomatic passport as well as his wife’s, given the possibility that they might have traveled to another country to evade justice. (Europe Press).
