Renowned philosopher, lawyer and president of the Brazilian Association of Lawyers and Legal Technology (AB2L) Daniel Marquez conducted an amazing experiment that tested the capabilities of the ChatGPT system. In the 2022 OAB Stage 1 evaluation, the chatbot scored 48 out of 80, easily exceeding the minimum score of 40 points required for approval.
According to Marquez himself, the experiment consisted of sending multiple-choice questions to ChatGPT and asking the machine not only to choose an alternative, but also to briefly justify its answer. The initial test, which took place on January 3, brought the system 36 points. However, after making improvements to OpenAI, the chatbot was able to achieve the required score to pass the offline address book test.
Thus, Marquez believes that the system will be able to pass the second phase, when the test requires candidates to answer four discursive questions.

In the US, ChatGPT also demonstrated its legal skills by taking a test similar to the OAB. An experiment conducted by a team of researchers at Stanford University assessed a chatbot’s ability to answer multiple-choice legal questions and gave the system a higher score than the average of human participants.
In Colombia, a judge used ChatGPT to write down a verdict in a sensitive case involving an autistic child’s right to health. The tool, which was able to understand and analyze extensive legal documents, assisted the judge in his decision and helped ensure a fair and accurate verdict.
In the UK, prominent law firm Allen and Overy has announced that it will use ChatGPT to help draft contracts faster and more efficiently. The technology, which can generate accurate and personalized texts in seconds, will allow the firm’s lawyers to focus on more complex and strategic tasks.
